Security and vigilance online has never been more important.
Alan Brill, Senior Managing Director, Cyber Risk at Kroll, comments on 2021 Safer Internet Day:
‘The pandemic has forced entire sections of society online for shopping, work and entertainment, and our social interactions have been no different.
‘Put simply, more time online equals a greater chance of falling victim to fraud, abuse and misleading information – instances of which have skyrocketed since the start of the first government-imposed lockdown in March. The transition to remote working and learning is behind a lot of the risks – privacy in video conference calls, unsecured personal tech and public networks, and a greater reliance on digital communication all provide more opportunities for harm to be done.
‘To ensure security on the internet, all users need to understand the warning signs and potential risks that come with migrating our education, careers, banking habits, news consumption and social lives online. Users need to take steps to ensure that when sharing personal information, such as bank details, birthdays or address details over the internet, they have confirmation the website or service they’re interacting with is legitimate. Other simpler steps, such as selecting the highest privacy settings on social media or setting up two factor authentication on banking and personal finance apps will go a long way to maintaining safety online. Users should also ensure that they report any damaging, harmful or misleading content, not just for their own personal safety but also to ensure they do their bit to help protect wider society.’
