Record Trading Month on London Stock Exchange

The value of UK and international trading on the London Stock Exchange reached record levels in January with shares worth GBP366 billion changing hands in just 20 days of trading - an average of GBP18.25 billion a day. In UK stocks the value of trading was GBP118 billion during January 1999 beating the previous record of GBP102 billion set in March 1999 (up 15 per cent). International trading saw an even greater increase in value at GBP248 billion compared to GBP209 billion in March 1998 (up 18.5 per cent). Turnover in Euroland stocks, the majority of which was conducted in euros, accounted for 42 per cent of the total value of business undertaken on the London Stock Exchange in January. Trading in stocks from Euroland companies during January 1999 was up 52 per cent on the same period last year.
