Record Trading Day On ASX

Date 07/07/2005

ASX experienced a record trading day today, reflected across the market and throughout the day.

At 4:30pm (AET) the number of equity transactions recorded was 150,698 trades. This easily exceeded the previous record trading level of 133,309 equities transactions, established on 23 February this year.

The total value of today’s equities trades was $4.2 billion. Although trading was boosted by the strong interest in the debut of Tattersalls (TTS), which accounted for 11,750 trades, a record would have been set in any case. Tattersalls made its market debut at 11:30am (AET), with 2,048 trades on the opening. The Tattersalls IPO ceremony in Melbourne was hosted by the ASX managing director and CEO, Tony D’Aloisio, and the deputy CEO Colin Scully.

“The opening auction for Tattersalls was one of the strongest in several years, and went smoothly and efficiently. It was pleasing to see the market’s activity maintained throughout the day, notwithstanding the overall direction of the market,” Mr Scully said.

“Today’s trading activity follows the record-breaking financial year just finished, which saw average daily trading activity at 87,500 transactions to the value of $3.1 billion a day. This is a further vote of confidence in the overall infrastructure of the market, helping to support market participants and listed entities in their capital raising and other business activities.”
