President von der Leyen held a cordial phone call with Prime Minister Mark Carney, during which she highlighted the importance of regular coordination with trusted partners and allies like Canada.
She reaffirmed the EU's strong commitment to open and predictable trade, and expressed her determination to work closely with Canada on reforming the global trading system—including through enhanced cooperation with the countries of the Comprehensive and Progressive Agreement for Trans-Pacific Partnership (CPTPP).
The President described the EU–Canada relationship as a true success story, anchored by the Comprehensive Economic and Trade Agreement (CETA), which has led to a 66% increase in bilateral goods trade since 2017.
On security and defence, President von der Leyen welcomed the prospect of deeper cooperation and praised Prime Minister Carney for Canada's steadfast support to Ukraine, including through its active role in the Coalition of the Willing.
