The number of investment accounts operated by the Participants of the National Depository for Securities (KDPW) increased by 26.9 thousand in June 2011. This was the highest monthly increment this year, mainly as a result of the IPO of Jastrzębska Spółka Węglowa (JSW). At the end of June, banks and brokers operated 1,527,526 accounts in total. The number of accounts increased by over 48.5 thousand year to date.
Two big IPOs arranged by the State Treasury this year (JSW and BGŻ) added around 35 thousand new accounts. In May, the time of the IPO of BGŻ, the number of accounts grew by over 9 thousand. The IPO of JSW did not boost the number of accounts as much as the privatisation projects completed last year, and yet 168 thousand investors subscribed for shares of this coal company. “This suggests that most investors who bought JSW shares were not beginners and already held investment accounts. Companies privatised by the State Treasury usually spur additional investor interest and attract both seasoned investors and beginners to the capital market. It is with new investors in mind, as well as investors willing to learn more about informed investments, that the Civic Shareholding project has been developed with active involvement of KDPW,” said KDPW CEO Iwona Sroka.
