Philadelphia Stock Exchange Equity Options Up 65%; Sector Index Volume Up 35%

The Philadelphia Stock Exchange announced Thursday that equity options trading volume was 8,570,998 contracts in September, up 40% over the same year-ago period when 6,139,724 contracts traded.

For the first nine months of 2001, 75,387,720 equity options contracts traded, a 65% increase over the same year-ago period when 45,562,006 contracts traded.

Sector index options trading volume was 359,933 in September, up 15% from the same year-ago period when 312,776 contracts traded.

For the first nine months of 2001, 3,685,663 sector index options traded, a 35% increase over the same year-ago period when 2,728,053 contracts traded.

PHLX currently lists options on eleven sectors: PHLX/KBW Bank Sector (BKX); Computer Box Maker Sector (BMX); Drug Sector (RXS); Forest and Paper Products Sector (FPP); Gold/Silver Sector (XAU); Oil Service Sector (OSX); OTC Prime Sector (OTX); The Street.com Internet Sector (DOT); Semiconductor Sector (SOX); Utility Sector (UTY); and Wireless Telecom Sector (YLS).

Equity trading volume was 161,795,103 shares traded in September, a 2% increase over the same year-ago period when 158,662,745 shares traded. For the first nine months of 2001, 1.6 billion shares traded, a 3.49% decline from the same year ago period last year.

Volume in customized and standardized currency options was 36,091 in September a 11 % decline over the same year ago period when 40,741 contracts traded. For the first nine months of 2001, 364,266 contracts traded, a 2.25 % increase over the same year ago period when 356,240 contracts traded.
