Date 20/01/2009

The California Public Employees’ Retirement System (CalPERS) reported that Patricia Clarey has joined the CalPERS Board of Administration as the designated representative of the California State Personnel Board (SPB). She replaces SPB Representative Anne Sheehan, who stepped down in December 2008.

Clarey currently serves as Senior Vice-President and Chief Regulatory & External Relations Officer for Health Net, Inc., one of the nation’s largest publicly traded managed health care companies providing health benefits to approximately 6.7 million individuals.

Prior to her position at Health Net, Clarey was Chief of Staff to California Governor Arnold Schwarzenegger.

“Pat brings extensive experience in policy issues of importance to CalPERS,”  said Rob Feckner, President of the CalPERS Board of Administration. “We look forward to her representation on the Board on behalf of the State Personnel Board.”

Clarey has more than 25 years of public and private sector experience. She has directed federal, state, and local government affairs for two major corporations, Chevron and Transamerica, and served as president of the Transamerica Foundation in San Francisco.

In addition, Clarey served at senior levels for the Department of the Interior in President Reagan's administration, and was Deputy Chief of Staff for former California Governor Pete Wilson. Her committee appointments on the CalPERS Board are pending.

Clarey received her master’s degree in Public Administration from the John F. Kennedy School of Government at Harvard University, and her bachelor’s degree from Union College in Schenectady, N.Y.

She currently serves on several appointed boards and commissions. She was a Senior Fellow at Harvard’s Kennedy School of Government, and a Senior Fellow at the UCLA School of Public Policy.

CalPERS is the nation’s largest public pension fund with approximately $177 billion in assets. CalPERS provides retirement benefits to more than 1.6 million State, school and local public agency employees, retirees and their families, and health benefits to nearly 1.3 million members.
