The month of August was the busiest ever on the Premier Marché and Second Marché as transaction volumes reached a daily average of EUR2.43 billion, showing increases of +43.6% compared to August 1998 and +17.29% to 1998 as a whole. July's daily average of EUR2.89 billion (+33.61% and +39.42%) was second only to June's record figure (EUR2.94 million). Total transaction volume for the first eight months was EUR437.46 billion, a 30.0% increase over the same period last year, with 34.9 million trades being registered (+22.6%). The number of trades in July and August was 4.7 million and 3.9 million respectively.
Transaction volumes on Le Nouveau Marché reached EUR253.25 million in July for a daily average of EUR12.05 million (+38% compared to June). A total of EUR140.08 million changed hands in August with a daily average of EUR6.36 million (+15.9% compared to August 1998). The daily average of trades in July was up 13.3% compared to the previous month, at 3,880 for a total of 80,914 trades for the month. August had an average of 2,598 trades daily (-33.0%) for a monthly total of 57,158.
Trading of French equities reached EUR60.62 billion in July and EUR53.43 billion in August. The daily average number of trades for July was 225,629 (+2.72% compared to the previous month), and 175,505 for August (-21.77%). As of August 31, total capitalisation of French stocks on the Premier Marché and Second Marché was EUR1.04 billion.
The number of futures and options traded on the MATIF and MONEP totalled 13,303,693 in August (+9.4% for the month) and 12,165,324 in July (-21.5%). A total of 12,844,581 equity and index derivatives contracts were traded on the MONEP in August as EUR998.6 million changed hands (11,505,118 contracts in July for EUR945.9 million). Open interest in August stood at 24,994,355, an increase of 13.8% compared to July's total of 21,959,202 lots (+19.2% compared to June). A total of 444,633 fixed-interest and 14,479 commodity-futures contracts were traded on the MATIF in August (634,816 and 25,390 in July).
