Oslo Børs: Milestone For The Derivatives Market

Date 02/03/2004

Oslo Børs saw trading in the derivatives market exceed a daily average of 30,000 contracts for the first full month ever in February. Average daily volume for the month was 31,700 contracts.

The past couple of years have seen a marked increase in interest in the Norwegian derivatives market, with a growing volume of activity. Derivatives trading has grown even more strongly than trading in the equity market.

"We are of course very pleased to see this increase. We have worked hard over many years to increase awareness and knowledge of derivatives in the Norwegian market. In addition there have been some positive changes in the regulations affecting derivatives trading. These factors, together with increasing activity in the underlying equity market, are the main reasons for what now seems to be a clear trend for increasing use of derivatives in the Norwegian market", comments Linus Lønnroth, Head of the Derivatives Department at Oslo Børs.
