One Year Of Trading In Agriculturals At EEX: Dairy Products On A Growth Path

Date 24/05/2016

Following the successful migration of the agricultural products from Eurex Exchange to its platform, the European Energy Exchange (EEX) has reported positive results one year on.

As of 10 May 2016, a total of 52,978 contracts were traded in agricultural products since they launched on the EEX derivatives market. Dairy in particular, developed very favourably with trading in butter, skimmed milk powder and whey powder accounting for 54,215 tonnes (equals 10,843 contracts) of the overall volume. Trading volumes also grew on the market for European processing potatoes with a total of 1,052,050 tonnes (42,082 contracts) being traded on EEX since launch.

“On the anniversary of agricultural trading at EEX, the volume traded in the dairy segment has already exceeded the volume traded on EEX and Eurex from January to December 2015”, emphasises Sascha Siegel, Head of Agricultural Commodities at EEX.

In 2015, a total of 29,380 tonnes (5,876 contracts) were traded on the dairy products segment of EEX and Eurex. In 2016, EEX exceeded this figure as early as May: The dairy volume traded on EEX from 1 January to 2 May was 29,550 tonnes (5,910 contracts).

EEX’s product portfolio in agricultural products comprises trading in financially settled futures in dairy, processing potatoes as well as contracts regarding hogs and piglets. In addition, EEX also offers a clearing service for fertiliser contracts.
