October Volume At CBOE Ranks Second All-Time

Trading volume at the Chicago Board Options Exchange (CBOE), the world's largest options exchange, continued to surpass record levels established last year as 32,435,243 options contracts (18,945,726 calls and 13,489,517 puts) traded in October, a 26% increase over the year ago October volume of 25,716,989 contracts. Open interest in all CBOE listed options stood at 50,852,378 contracts at month's end, 36% higher than the close of October last year when open interest stood at 37,396,223 contracts.

The 32,435,243 contracts traded in October was the second-highest monthly total ever at the Exchange, falling shy of the all-time record of 35,176,764 contracts traded in March 2000. Seven of the top ten highest monthly volume totals in the Exchange's history have occurred in 2000. On Friday, October 20th, 2,264,579 contracts traded, making it the fourth- busiest single-day of trading in the history of the Exchange. The all-time high was set on April 14, 2000 when 2,388,759 contracts were traded. Seven of the top ten highest single-day volume totals in the Exchange's history have taken place in 2000.

Total option volume at CBOE hit a new year-to-date record for the end of October with 275,764,454 contracts (179,131,766 calls and 96,632,688 puts) which is 38% ahead of the previous October year-to-date record of 199,314,647 contracts, set last October. On October 12th, year-to-date volume at CBOE stood at 255,337,498 contracts, surpassing 1999's entire volume total of 254,331,851 contracts.

Year-to-date volume in stock options reached a record 236,051,937 contracts (161,676,143 calls and 74,375,794 puts), an increase of 55% over the year-to-date total of 151,872,886 contracts traded at the end of October 1999. During the month of October a total of 27,734,624 stock option contracts (16,987,056 calls and 10,747,568 puts) traded, an increase of 36% over October 1999's stock option volume of 20,416,067 contracts. Open interest in stock options trading stood at 46,607,550 contracts (29,565,448 calls and 17,042,102 puts) at the end of October, an increase of 42% over the close of October '99 when open interest stood at 32,922,531 contracts.

Total index option volume for October at CBOE was 4,699,628 contracts (1,958,107 calls and 2,741,521 puts) compared to 5,294,742 contracts in October 1999, a decline of 11%. Trading in S&P 500® Index options (SPX) reached 2,174,458 contracts (909,121 calls and 1,265,337 puts) and end-of-the-month open interest stood at 1,906,911 contracts, versus 2,322,821 contracts at the close of October 1999, a decrease of 18%. Trading volume for the month of October in the S&P 100® Index options (OEX) was 1,366,681 contracts (619,346 calls and 747,335 puts) and end-of-the-month open interest stood at 197,117 contracts, versus 369,370 contracts at the end of October 1999, a decline of 47%. Trading volume in CBOE's newest index product, the MNXsm, continued to post impressive figures with 342,940 contracts (156,581 calls and 186,359 puts) traded. Average daily volume stood at 15,588 contracts, while open interest in MNX reached 232,337 contracts at the end of October.

The CBOE's newest product, the iSharesSM S&P 100® Index Fund (OEF), was launched on October 27th. The iShares S&P 100 Index Fund is an exchange traded fund that seeks investment results which correspond generally to the price and yield performance, before fees and expenses, of the S&P 100 Index®. In its first three days of trading, iShares posted a total volume of 36,900 shares traded.
