11.5 million transactions were registered on Euronext’s cash markets in October 2004, making the month the busiest since April this year. Although average daily volume was down 8.3 % on October 2003, the activity was up 6.2% on September 2004 and up 8.5% compared to the average of the six previous months. Since the beginning of the year 117 million transactions have been completed. This represents a daily average of 545,000.
Shares
10.9 million transactions were registered in shares during October 2004, up 5.6% on the previous month. A total of 111 million transactions have been completed over the first ten months of 2004, slightly down 6.4% on the same period of 2003. The year-to-date average daily number of share transactions amounted to 519,000.
Certificates & warrants
19,046 transactions were completed in certificates and warrants on an average daily basis in October, up 27.1% compared to the previous month. The year-to-date daily average number of transactions in those products amounted to 18,144, up 5% on the same period last year.
Derivatives products
Euronext.liffe, the international derivatives business of Euronext, has traded over 676 million futures and options contracts year-to-date, up 13% on the same period last year. Average daily volume this October remained steady compared to October last year with 2.8 million contracts traded.
Individual equity products have shown the strongest growth in the year-to-date trading over 275 million contracts, up 28% on January to October 2003. Equity products, as a whole, traded 406 million futures and options year-to-date, up 15% on 2003.
Short term interest products traded over 22 million futures and options in October bringing the volume this year to over 250 million contracts, up 10% on the same period in 2003.
Euronext.liffe’s Eurodollar continued to grow with new open interest, daily and monthly trading records reached in October. 25 October saw both a traded volume record of 72,614 contracts and a new open interest record of 120,242 contracts. Euronext.liffe’s Eurodollar traded over 740,000 contracts in October, a new monthly record since its launch in March, surpassing its previous record of 603,221 contracts traded in September.
Commodity products traded 604,000 futures and options in October and, in the year-to-date, are up 19%.
