The NZX 50 Index capitalisation reached an all time high of $49.7 billion. This reflects a year to date increase of $3.4 billion and an increase of $19.2 billion from its launch on 3 March 2003. The increase in the index is attributable to strong individual company performances and also to the inclusion of both Vector Limited (VCT) and Westpac Banking Corporation (WBC). The increase in market capitalisation of the NZX 50 Index has created a more balanced index. Telecom is now weighted at 23.7%, this is down from a peak weighting of 30.03% in May 2003. The top five NZX50 constituents also include CEN (9.10%), FBU (7.64%), CAH (6.85%), and AIA (5.75%).
One notable feature of September market activity was the increase in orders placed into the market. The total number and daily average increased by 30% compared to the same period last year. This reflects an increase in Direct Market Access (DMA) activity and the use of automated or programmed trading strategies by NZX Participants and their clients.
