NZX SciTech Index- Unsung Stars Outshine The Headline Index

Date 16/05/2007

In the twelve months since launch the NZX SciTech Index has climbed 14.3%, compared with a 10.7% rise in the NZX 50 Index for the same period.

The three top performers, NZX SciTech stars Sealegs, Rakon and Software of Excellence, have had annualised returns of between 434% and 145% since launch of the index in May last year.

NZX Markets Development Manager, Geoff Brown said, “There are many innovative SciTech companies in New Zealand that are growing fast and need capital.

“An NZX listing provides access to capital from a range of investors, the security and transparency of continuous disclosure and increased profile for each growth milestone. A number of the companies in the NZX SciTech have seen remarkable increases in share price and liquidity since they became a part of the Index,” said Brown.

NZX SciTech Index – One Year Performance

Scitech Graph

The NZX SciTech Index tracks the combined share price performances of 25 NZAX and NZSX listed Biotechnology, Information and Communication Technology and Industrial Technology companies.

Raising the profile of listed technology companies and the New Zealand technology sector as a whole was the key driver for development of the NZX SciTech Index. The NZX SciTech Index also provides a general measure of performance for the sector.

It is also one year today since Rakon Limited listed on the NZSX Market. Rakon, a great role model for high growth potential New Zealand tech companies, has returned over 225% since listing, posting another strong result yesterday.

Rakon Chief Financial Officer, Graham Leaming said, "Listing on the NZX was a big milestone for Rakon and has provided a great platform for us to significantly grow our business. The New Zealand investment community has demonstrated they will embrace high growth technology companies and we are very pleased with the positive support we have received."
