Key Facts
- Average daily trades was 2,627 for October, a 7% decrease from October 2004 when the PowerCo takeover bid drove strong trading volumes. The October average compares with an average of 2637 per month over the first nine months of 2005, showing October was a continuation of the strong trading activity seen this year.
- Total value traded reached $2.3 billion for the month of October, similar to that recorded in October 2004. Average daily value was $113 million, a 4% decrease versus October 2004, and also down slightly on the very strong 2005 monthly average of $128 million.
- ABN AMRO issued five new warrants in October.
- The NZX 50 Index eased back to 3293.2 points taking its lead from global moves.
Transaction activity in October, measured by both the average daily number of transactions and average daily value traded, fell slightly compared with the same period in 2004. This was due to the PowerCo takeover bid fuelling very strong trading numbers in October last year. However the numbers show that the 2005 year's strong trading trend is continuing.
Existing Issuers issued an additional $106 million in September ($14 million in debt and $92 million in equity). For the year to date, the total capital raised on NZX's markets across debt and equity totals $3.3 billion. This is an increase on the $2.5 billion raised by the same time last year.
Following on from a strong September, there was a marked increase in orders placed into the market. The daily average number of orders placed into the market was 9,395, this is a rise of 132% compared with October 2004. This reflects a continued increase in Direct Market Access (DMA) activity and the growing use of automated or programmed trading strategies by NZX Participants and their clients.
ABN Amro listed their second group of instalment warrants on the 18th of October. The five new warrants cover Hellaby, Nuplex, Pyne Gould Corporation, Sky TV and Trustpower. There are now 21 instalment warrants on issue comprised of 19 ABN and 2 UBS installment warrants covering a wide range of New Zealand 's most prominent listed companies.
The NZX 50 benchmark index came off its September high of 3452.8 points in October. The Index ended the month at 3293.2 points from a low during October of 3240.9 points due to a global trend of lower bourses as world economic concerns around the US dollar and oil prices weighed. Locally, declining business confidence dented market sentiment.
