Date 01/03/2005

New Zealand Exchange Limited (NZX) today released its February 2005 operating metrics. NZX releases operating metrics each month, and beginning today, monthly operating metrics will be released on the first Tuesday of each month prior to the start of trading at 10:00am.

The new operating metrics have been designed to increase the quality and clarity of information provided. A complete history of operating metrics can be found on our website at www.nzx.com/aboutus/investor/metrics.

Market statistics summary

Highlights

  • Total trades up 28% compared with February 2004.
  • Average daily trades reached 2,933 for February 2005.
  • Total value traded up 19% against February 2004. Average daily value reached $126 million.

Trading volumes in February increased 28% on February 2004. Abnormally high volumes of trades are usually driven by major market events (e.g. large IPOs, stands in the market). February's increase is not directly attributable to any single market event, but appears to indicate an increase in overall NZX market participation.

Only one month in 2004 (November) saw more trades than this February's 58,657 trades. February also witnessed six days where total trades eclipsed the benchmark of 3,000 trades per day. The increase in trades was spread across NZX Trading Participants, with all 16 Trading Participants experiencing an increase in their total trades compared with February 2004.

Other NZX Metrics

In addition to detailing its market business, NZX will from now include in its monthly metrics more detailed information on its two subsidiary businesses: Smartshares and Link Market Services Limited.

Smartshares now has $190 million funds under management across its four listed ETF (exchange traded fund) products. Total investors at the end of February 2005, our first month of publishing this statistic for the Smartshares business, were 10,440.

Link Market Services, including BK Registries Limited, is serving 119 clients, including 69 listed issuers. Link's Auckland office is now open and the development work involved in modifying ASX Perpetual's OSCAR technology to serve the New Zealand market is progressing according plan. The software package is currently undergoing accreditation and Link expects the software to be in operation by the end of April 2005.
