NZX April Operating Metrics 2006

  • NZX 50 Index ended the month on 3795, a 13% increase since the start of 2006. An all time high of 3807 was reached during the month.
  • Total number of trades was 42,313 and average daily trades were 2,489 for April.
  • Total value traded in April was $2.3 billion with an average daily value traded of $135 million, a 7% increase on the average in April last year.
  • Average daily Direct Market Access (DMA) trades reached 974, a 31% increase on the average in April 2005.
  • Total NZAX trade numbers were 588, compared to 376 in April 2005, a 56% increase. Total value traded on the NZAX was $6 million, double the value traded in April 2005.
  • Total NZDX trade numbers continue to grow, reaching 2,244 compared to 1,995 in April last year, a 12% increase.
  • Delegat's became an NZSX Listed Issuer on 21 April, the second main board listing this year.
  • A further nine Instalment Warrants were listed by ABN AMRO Equity Derivatives (NZ) Limited on April 10. This brings the total warrants on the market to 36. Total number of warrants trades reached 511, and the value traded was $8.1 million.
  • Macquarie Securities (New Zealand) Limited became an accredited NZX Trading and Advising Firm, a Delivery and Settlement Participant and an NZX Sponsor.
  • Smartshares funds under management climbed to $224 million across its four listed Exchange Traded Funds (ETFs).

The NZX 50 rose 93 points this month to end on 3795, a 13% increase year to date and a 2.5% increase this month.

"With just 17 days of trading in April we have seen a drop in the total number and total value traded," said NZX Head of Products, Geoff Brown. "However we have seen a significant increase in the number and value traded in our quiet achievers category, the NZAX, NZDX and Warrants, since this time last year."

The average daily value traded was $135 million for the 17 trading days in April. NZAX total value traded was double ($6 million) the total value traded in April 2005. NZAX stocks are also trading more since the same month last year. There were a total of 588 trades compared to 376 in April 2005. NZDX total trade numbers reached 2,244 compared to 1,995 in April 2005, a 12% increase.

In April NZX welcomed Delegat's Group Limited to the NZSX Market. It is the second NZX Listed Issuer to join the NZSX market in 2006, ending its first day of trading with a market capitalisation of $155 million.

We also welcomed nine new Instalment warrants to the market and celebrated the first anniversary of the re-introduction of this fast growing product. There are now 36 warrant listings on the market. Macquarie Securities (New Zealand) Limited (MAQA) began trading on the New Zealand markets as an accredited NZX Trading and Advising Firm, and Delivery and Settlement Participant, from Monday 1 May 2006.

"The Listing of both Delegat's and the new Instalment Warrants is a sign of the health of the New Zealand markets," said Brown. "They add to the diverse product choice for the kiwi investor."

Macquarie Securities (New Zealand) Limited (MAQA) began trading on the New Zealand markets as the newest NZX Trading and Advising Firm, and Delivery and Settlement Participant. Macquarie Securities (New Zealand) Limited will conduct the institutional business previously conducted by Macquarie Equities New Zealand Limited (MENW). Macquarie Equities New Zealand Limited will continue to conduct Macquarie 's retail business.

The Direct Market Access (DMA) metrics illustrate the continued increase in use of DMA technology and software in the New Zealand market. 39% of all trades on NZX markets in April 2006 were the result of orders placed through a DMA application. 

For the year to date, the total capital raised on NZX's markets across debt and equity totals $1.5 billion.
