NYSE Names Search Committee To Recruit Permanent Chairman And CEO

Date 03/10/2003

The New York Stock Exchange has appointed a search committee to recruit a permanent chairman and chief executive officer, and named Laurence D. Fink, an NYSE director and chairman and CEO of BlackRock, Inc., as chairman of the committee.

The committee will also include Madeleine K. Albright, principal, The Albright Group; Robert B. Fagenson, vice chairman, Van der Moolen Specialists USA, LLC; Mel Karmazin, president and COO, Viacom Inc.; Gerald M. Levin, retired CEO, AOL Time Warner Inc.; John J. Mack, co-CEO, Credit Suisse Group and CEO, Credit Suisse First Boston; John S. Reed, interim chairman and CEO, NYSE; and Larry W. Sonsini, chairman and CEO, Wilson Sonsini Goodrich & Rosati.

"The committee intends to move swiftly and effectively, as it did when we named John Reed as interim chairman and CEO," said Mr. Fink, who also chaired the search committee for the Exchange's interim chairman and CEO.

"Even as we draw the architecture of how the NYSE will be governed going forward, it is important to begin now the process of defining and recruiting who we want to lead the Exchange on a permanent basis," said Mr. Reed. "This is too important an institution to have interim leadership for too long a period of time. Our priorities today are to develop this stronger set of governance principles and practices, and permanently replace myself as chairman and CEO."
