NYSE Issues Monthly Short Interest Report

The New York Stock Exchange yesterday reported short interest as of the close of business on the settlement date of Sept. 15, 2000 reflecting transactions through Sept. 12, 2000.

Based on information received from members and member organizations, short interest increased to 4,312,974,784 shares on Sept. 15, 2000 from 4,182,377,858 shares on Aug. 15, 2000. This is a record, surpassing the previous record set on June 15, 2000.

The short interest on Sept. 15, 2000 was equal to 1.4 percent of the total shares listed on the Exchange.

The short interest in warrants as Sept. 15, amounted to 108,731 warrants, compared with 131,256 warrants on Aug. 15, 2000.

As of Sept. 15, 2000, 3,576 stocks and 10 warrants were available for trading on the Exchange. Of these, 2,799 issues had either a short position of 5,000 shares or a change of 2,000 shares since the last monthly report.

A short sale is any sale of a security which the seller does not own, or any sale which is completed by the delivery of a borrowed security.
