“We are delighted to announce the addition of three new sector indexes to a diversified family of NYSE-branded indexes,” said Robert McSweeney, senior vice president of competitive position. “The NYSE Energy, Financial and Health Care Indexes measure the aggregate performance of the world's best companies that meet NYSE's high listing requirements with respect to profitability and company size. The differentiated performance of NYSE-listed stocks translates into higher return and lower volatility for the NYSE Sector Indexes relative to their peer sector indexes. Components in each of these indexes also represent a significant portion of the underlying sectors in the U.S. and globally."
The new indexes are subsets of the NYSE Composite Index®, relaunched in January 2003 under a new methodology and recalculated to a base value of 5,000. Components in each of the three new sector indexes are NYSE-listed common stocks that are classified according to the Dow Jones Global Classification Standard.
In addition to the revised NYSE Composite Index, the three new sector indexes join four others in the NYSE family of indexes; the NYSE U.S. 100 IndexSM, NYSE International 100 IndexSM, NYSE World Leaders IndexSM and the NYSE TMT IndexSM, all of which were introduced in June 2002. As of Jan. 8, all NYSE indexes will be calculated and maintained by Dow Jones Indexes.
