NYSE Group Employees To Partner With Operation HOPE To Promote Financial Literacy To Inner-City Youths

Date 18/04/2006

NYSE Group, Inc. employees will volunteer time to teach financial literacy to economically disadvantaged youths, in partnership with Operation HOPE’s ongoing programs to bring economic education to the inner city.

The NYSE Group-Operation HOPE project will be part of NYSE Group’s Community Volunteer program, in which the company enables groups of employees to take a day away from their jobs to volunteer for a community organization. The volunteer program was initiated by the NYSE Diversity Council with the support of CEO John A. Thain. In this instance, employees later this month – Financial Literacy Month – will visit a school and teach from a curriculum that covers the basics of banking, investments, credit and other personal-finance subjects. A field trip by the students to the New York Stock Exchange also is planned.

“The strength of our economy depends on the participation of a financially literate public, and we are delighted with the opportunity to help build that literacy,” said NYSE Group CEO John A. Thain. “Particularly in economically disadvantaged areas, it is critical to give students the tools they need to make informed decisions about their personal finances, as well as how to manage the opportunities and risks of the world of investment.”

The NYSE Group-Operation HOPE volunteer program follows two years of grants to Operation HOPE from the NYSE Foundation, NYSE Group’s philanthropic foundation. In 2005, the Foundation donated $50,000 toward Operation HOPE’s financial literacy programs, and in 2004 contributed $25,000 to assist the Banking on Our Future program, Operation HOPE’s economic-education project undertaken in conjunction with the William Jefferson Clinton Foundation. The NYSE Group-Operation HOPE program was among those announced by President Bill Clinton last week at the kickoff of the 2006 Clinton Global Initiative.
