- Busiest Month, Week and Day Ever for U.S. and European Cash and Derivatives Trading
- Cash Volumes: +110% in Europe and + 63% in the U.S. year-on-year
- Derivatives volumes: +75% in Europe and +103% in the U.S. year-on-year
Record transaction volumes on its U.S. and European cash equities and derivatives exchanges in August produced the busiest trading month ever for NYSE Euronext (NYX), the world's most liquid and most diversified global exchange group.
In August, NYSE Group handled(1) a record total of 3.6 billion shares for year-over-year gains of 62.8%. In Europe, more than 33 million transactions(2) were recorded on Euronext's four cash equities markets, up 110.5% year-over-year. The company's European derivatives markets traded a record 103.9 million contracts for the month, for gains of 75.0% year-over-year. In the U.S., NYSE Arca reported 1.4 million equity option contracts executed daily on average in August, up 103% year-over-year.
"In addition to record transaction volume in August, we also experienced record system activity and message traffic on our trading platforms, which performed exceptionally well," said Nelson Chai, Chief Financial and Executive Vice President, NYSE Euronext.
CASH PRODUCTS
Euronext
-- Volumes on Euronext's cash markets more than doubled in
August, with 33.3 million transactions completed, up 110.5%
from the same month last year, making the month the busiest
ever.
-- In total, more than 210 million cash transactions were
registered on Euronext since the beginning of the year, up
42.9% from the same period in 2006.
-- In August 2007, Euronext's cash markets broke several
significant records with respect to trading activity, volume
and systems capacity. Five new top ten volume days were
registered during the month, with more than 2.4 million
transactions completed on Aug. 17 - the busiest day ever for
Euronext's markets.
-- Euronext reported 31.9 million equities transactions in August
2007, up 112.0% from the same month last year, bringing the
total number of equity transactions since January 2007 to 201
million, up 43.4% on the same period last year.
-- Year-on-year transactions on Euronext were up 337.1% for ETFs
and up 76.9% for Structured Products, which include warrants
and certificates. Since the beginning of the year,
transactions have improved 3.3% for Bonds.
NYSE Group
-- NYSE Group exchanges reported a record 3.6 billion shares
handled per day in August, up 62.8% year-over-year and 17.1%
year-to-date.
-- During August, NYSE Group exchanges reached new all-time
records in daily, weekly and monthly trading volumes. NYSE
Group's U.S. cash equities trading operations reported a
combined volume of over 22 billion shares traded during the
week-ended Aug. 10, its highest ever. On Aug. 16, NYSE Group
recorded its most active trading day ever in its U.S. cash
equities trading operation with 5.39 billion shares changing
hands.
-- NYSE Group once again processed more transactions than any
other U.S. exchange group with a total of 74.9 billion shares
traded and 82.8 billion shares handled during the month.
August's record trading volumes and message traffic highs
produced the three most active weeks and seven of the top ten
most active days in NYSE Group history.
-- NYSE Group's operations in NYSE-listed securities reported 2.8
billion shares handled per day, up 68.7% from the same month
last year and 21.1% year-to-date.
-- As the largest liquidity pool for ETFs in the U.S., NYSE Group
reported 453 million shares handled daily, up 204.5% from the
same period last year and 58.4% year-to-date.
DERIVATIVES PRODUCTS
Liffe
-- In what is usually the quietest month of the year, Liffe, NYSE
Euronext's leading futures and options business, recorded its
busiest month ever, trading a total of 104 million futures and
options contracts, up 75% from August last year. This is the
first time that Liffe has traded more than 100 million
contracts in a single month. Over 628 million contracts have
been traded year-to-date, up 26.4% from the same period last
year.
-- Interest rate products traded over 66 million contracts in
August, up 79.6% from the same month last year. Of this total,
63 million contracts were in short-term interest rate (STIR)
products - an all-time record month. Over 344 million
contracts have been traded year-to-date, up 24.2% from the
same period last year.
-- Equity products traded over 36 million contracts in August, up
69.3% from the same month last year. More than 275 million
equity products have been traded year-to-date, up 29.3%
year-on-year.
-- Liffe's pioneering Bclear service processed over 4 million
contracts in August - more than double the number processed in
August last year. 75 million contracts have been processed by
Bclear during 2007 so far - up 99% year-on-year.
-- In August, over 190,000 contracts were traded in the new early
trading session in Euribor futures (01:00 - 07:00 hrs London
time), up 8% on July. The longer trading day, which
facilitates market access for customers in Asia and Australia,
was launched on June 25.
-- Liffe's commodity products traded 1.1 million futures and
options contracts in August. Volumes are up 25.4%
year-to-date.
NYSE Arca Options
-- NYSE Arca reported 1.37 million equity option contracts
executed daily on average in August, up 103% from the same
month last year, and up 9% from July 2007.
-- From January 1 through August 31, 2007, NYSE Arca Options
achieved a 58% increase in its share of trading in SEC penny
pilot issues.
-- NYSE Arca's average daily volume in the penny pilot issues has
increased 168% to 294 thousand contracts per day in August, up
from 110 thousand contracts per day in January 2007.
-- NYSE Arca Options' third month of trading index options
produced a total volume increase of over 24 thousand contracts
traded, more than a 49% increase in volume from July 2007.
LISTINGS
Euronext
-- Five IPOs were listed on Euronext's markets in August 2007,
bringing the total number of IPOs since the beginning of the
year to a record 101, as compared to 84 during the same period
in 2006, with EUR 5.6/$7.7 billion raised in connection with
new listings.
-- Additionally, one new ETF was listed on NextTrack in August,
bringing the total number of new ETF listings since the
beginning of the year to 53.
NYSE Group
-- In August, there were 32 new listings on NYSE Group markets,
including funds and structured products. Among the 12 new
listings by operating companies were eight IPOs (excluding
funds) that raised a total of EUR 2.5/$3.4 billion.
-- The eight IPOs by operating companies included four non-US
companies that raised a total of EUR 1.4/$1.9 billion in
proceeds.
-- There were also nine new ETF listings that joined NYSE Group
markets in the month of August, as well as eleven structured
products.
