NYSE Euronext Reports Monthly Transaction Activity For April 2007

NYSE Euronext (NYSE Euronext: NYX) today announced transaction activity data1  for its six cash equities exchanges and six derivatives exchanges. As the world’s leading and most diversified global exchange group, NYSE Euronext operates the world’s largest and most liquid cash equities market centers trading a combined average daily value of €75.3/$102.4 billion with a total global market capitalization of listed companies valued at €21.7/$29.6 trillion year-to-date through April 30, 2007.

Cash Products

Euronext

  • Euronext’s cash markets registered their busiest April ever with 22.2 million transactions completed in April 2007, up 33.6% on the same month last year. In total, a record 96 million cash transactions were registered on Euronext since the beginning of the year, up 29.3% on the same period in 2006. This represents a record average daily volume of 1.2 million.

  • Euronext reported 21.3 million transactions registered in shares in April 2007, up 34.4% on the same month last year, representing a daily average of 1.1 million transactions.

  • Year-on-year transactions on Euronext were up 80% on NextTrack and up 16% on NextWarrants, which includes warrants and certificates.

NYSE Group

  • NYSE Group exchanges reported 2.6 billion shares handled2 per day, up 7.1% from the same month last year. NYSE Group’s operations in NYSE-listed securities reported 2.1 billion shares handled per day, up 13.8% from the same month last year.  

  • NYSE Group’s operations in ETF trading reported 186.4 million shares handled per day, up 20.7% from the same month last year.

Listings

NYSE Euronext

  • There were 253 new listings (IPOs, closed-end funds, transfers) and 19 ETF listings on NYSE Euronext’s markets in April 2007.

Euronext

NYSE Group

  • In April, there were 11new listings on the NYSE, including 7 IPOs. There was also 1 transfer to the NYSE from Nasdaq, bringing the number of Nasdaq transfers to 5 year-to-date. In April, 4 IPOs listed by operating companies (excluding funds) raised €1.6/$2.2 billion in connection with listing on the NYSE. The 3 closed-end funds joining the NYSE in April together raised €3.0/$4.1 billion on the NYSE. In addition, 4 ETFs were listed on the NYSE during the month.

  • On April 18, Darwin Professional Underwriters transferred to the NYSE from NYSE Arca, one year after listing as the first IPO on NYSE Arca.

Derivatives Products

Euronext.liffe

  • Euronext.liffe traded 64 million futures and options contracts in April 2007, up 7% on the same month in 2006, and over 283 million year-to-date, up 17% on the same period last year.

  • Equity products traded over 32 million contracts, up 33% from April 2006, and more than 127 million since the beginning of the year, up 22% year-on-year. Open interest in individual equity futures stood at a record high of 8,311,916 on 30 April. Euronext.liffe's Single Stock Futures traded over 6.8 million contracts during April.

  • Interest rate products traded over 30 million contracts in April and over 150 million year-to-date, up 14% on the same period in 2006.

  • Bclear, Euronext.liffe’s wholesale administration and clearing service, processed over 11 million contracts in equity products during the month, up 74% on the same month in 2006 and up 129% year-to-date. Open interest in individual equity options traded on Bclear stood at a record high of 3,525,242 on 30 April.

  • Euronext.liffe’s Commodity products traded over one million contracts in April, up 37% on the same month in 2006 and up 22% year-to-date.

NYSE Arca

  • NYSE Arca reported 1 million equity option contracts executed per day in April 2007, up 49% from the same month last year.

  • From January 1 through April 30, 2007, NYSE Arca Options achieved a 31% increase in its share of trading in the SEC penny pilot issues.  Average daily volume in the penny pilot issues has increased to 297,000 contracts per day in April, up from 220,000 contracts per day in January 2007.

Additional Business Highlights

  • April 4 marked the debut of NYSE Euronext, the result of the successful combination of NYSE Group, Inc. and Euronext N.V.  The newly-formed company began trading in Paris and New York under the ticker symbol “NYX”.

  • On April 10, 2007 , NSC, Euronext’s cash trading platform, successfully migrated to a new version capable of handling up to 10 times the volumes at 20 times the speed, with an average response time of 2 to 3 milliseconds.

  • On April 23, NYSE Group’s new bond trading platform, NYSE Bonds® began full operation, replacing the Automated Bond System (ABSSM). Based on NYSE Arca’s comprehensive matching technology, NYSE Bonds provides investors with transparent and highly efficient order executions for the corporate debt securities of all NYSE listed companies.

  • The NASD/NYSE Trade Reporting Facility (TRF) successfully processed its initial trades on April 26.   Designed to provide customers with a useful, reliable venue for reporting off exchange transactions, the NASD/NYSE TRF offers a competitive alternative to other OTC trade reporting facilities.

  • For the first quarter of 2007, NYSE listed companies were again recognized by independent research firm Elkins/McSherry as having the world’s lowest all-in trading costs. The NYSE also topped the rankings in all four quarters of 2006.
