In addition to the Dow Jones Industrial Average closing above 11,000 for the first time since 2001, the New York Stock Exchange Composite Index® (NYA) closed at a new high of 8053.42.  The previous closing high for the NYA was 8031.66 on Jan. 6, 2006.

Background:

The NYA is designed to measure the performance of all common stocks, ADRs, REITs and tracking stocks listed on the NYSE.  Reintroduced in 2003 with a new methodology and recalculated base value of 5,000, the NYA outperformed all major indexes in 2004 and 2005 while showing the lowest volatility.

Representing much of the NYSE’s $21.4 trillion market capitalization, the NYA is also available as an exchange-traded fund sponsored by Barclays Global Investors (BGI).  Introduced in 2004, the iShares NYSE Composite Index ETF (NYSE: NYC) was created to offer investors instant access to the quality and diversity of the NYSE list in a single trade.
