NYSE CEO John A. Thain Accepts American Red Cross’s Appeal For Employee Volunteers - New Effort Follows $1 Million Donation

Date 07/09/2005

New York Stock Exchange CEO John A. Thain announced that the NYSE will lend employees to the American Red Cross to help relief efforts in the wake of Hurricane Katrina.

During a visit to the NYSE trading floor to accept a $1 million donation from the NYSE Foundation, American Red Cross Chairman Bonnie McElveen-Hunter publicly called for businesses to donate their employees as well as funds to the Gulf Coast recovery. She asked companies to offer employees a paid week and cover travel expenses to help the Red Cross’s staff in the region. Mr. Thain immediately committed the NYSE to participate, joining Ms. McElveen-Hunter’s own company, Pace Communications, Inc., as the first companies to participate.

“As the CEO of the New York Stock Exchange, I was pleased to commit to participate in the American Red Cross’s new appeal for employee volunteers,” said Mr. Thain.

The NYSE Foundation is the private philanthropic foundation of the NYSE. In addition to the $1 million Foundation donation, the Foundation will match individual donations made to the American Red Cross by Exchange members and employees.
