NYSE Advises Customers About NASDAQ Problem That Confused The Market About Consolidated Prices

Date 19/01/2006

The New York Stock Exchange is recommending that due to the fact that NASDAQ experienced a technical glitch that resulted in erroneous trade reporting and incorrect consolidated closing prices for Jan. 18 on a substantial number of NYSE-listed stocks, investors and customers should use NYSE-only closing prices for all NYSE-listed stocks for that trading day. On Jan. 18, beginning at 3:39 p.m. (EST), NASDAQ experienced a problem in submitting transactions in NYSE and AMEX listed securities to the Consolidated Tape.

Approximately 81,000 trade reports were rejected from 3:39 p.m. (EST) through the end of the day. In addition, there were approximately 650 transactions that occurred at 9:50 a.m. that were resubmitted at approximately 5:50 p.m. without the proper modifiers, potentially affecting last sale. The technical issue causing the problem has been corrected, and NASDAQ is working to resubmit the rejected transactions on an as-of basis.

All consolidated closing prices on nyse.com were corrected as of 3:30 p.m. today. All NYSE-only closing prices from Jan. 18 were correct throughout and continue to be correct.
