Date 07/09/2004

The New York Mercantile Exchange, Inc., announced today that it set monthly records in August for total Exchange volume, futures volume, NYMEX Division futures volume, and light, sweet crude oil futures volume.

Exchange volume totaled 14,544,282 futures and options contracts, surpassing the previous record of 13,897,285 contracts set in January 2003.

Futures volume was 11,851,448 contracts, exceeding the record of 11,509,429 contracts set this past March. NYMEX Division futures volume was 10,158,156 contracts, breaking the record of 9,577,051 contracts set in June. Light, sweet crude oil futures volume of 4,987,379 contracts broke the record of 4,633,267 contracts also traded during June.

Exchange President James E. Newsome said, "These records, along with a 14% increase in overall Exchange volume so far this year, stand as testimony to the confidence that the marketplace has in the Exchange as a liquid, financially secure trading forum. An ever–expanding, comprehensive slate of financial instruments for the energy and metals markets offer market participants unparalleled flexibility in offsetting their price risk, while the safeguards of the Exchange clearinghouse stand behind each transaction."
