NYMEX Holdings, Inc. (NYSE:NMX), the parent company of the New York Mercantile Exchange, Inc. (NYMEX), announced today that average daily volume for the first quarter 2007 was 1.512 million contracts per day, a 40 percent increase from the same period a year ago. Total volume was 92.210 million contracts for the first quarter.
NYMEX volume on the CME Globex® electronic trading platform for the first quarter 2007 was 597,000 contracts per day and represented a 485 percent increase over the first quarter 2006 electronic volume on NYMEX ACCESS®. NYMEX floor-traded average daily volume was 330,000 contracts per day, a decrease of 39 percent over the first quarter 2006.
COMEX electronic volume on CME Globex for the first quarter 2007 averaged 90,000 contracts per day and represented a 650 percent increase over the first quarter 2006 NYMEX ACCESS electronic volume. COMEX floor-traded metals average daily volume was 56,000 contracts, a decrease of 60 percent over first quarter 2006.
Average daily volume on the NYMEX ClearPort® off-exchange electronic trading and clearing platform increased 54 percent for the first quarter 2007 to 373,000 contracts, from 242,000 contracts in the comparable period of 2006.
The remaining average daily volume of 66,000 per day consisted of other transactions which include position transfers and exchanges.
March Highlights Average daily volume in March 2007 was 1.372 million contracts per day, a 44 percent increase from 956,000 per day contracts in the same period of 2006. NYMEX electronic volume on the CME Globex electronic trading platform was 567,000 contracts per day and represented a 473 percent increase over the March 2006 electronic volume on NYMEX ACCESS. NYMEX floor volume averaged 267,000 contracts per day, a decrease of 46 percent over March 2006.
COMEX electronic volume on CME Globex averaged 100,000 contracts per day and represented an 809 percent increase over the March 2006 NYMEX ACCESS electronic volume. COMEX floor-traded metals average daily volume was 52,000 contracts, a decrease of 63 percent from March 2006.
Average daily volume on NYMEX ClearPort increased 74 percent in March 2007 to 322,000 contracts, from 185,000 contracts in the comparable period of 2006.
The remaining 63,000 trades per day consisted of other transactions which include position transfers and exchanges.
Note: The above figures are preliminary and may change slightly due to the fact that the last days of the month have not been finalized and are thus subject to adjustments and corrections. Average daily volume is based on 22 and 23 trading days for March 2007 and 2006, respectively.
February Rate Per Contrac
Gross average rate per contract across all venues in February 2007 was $1.51, while the net average rate per contract, including direct transaction costs, was $1.24. This is compared to gross average rate per contract of $1.34 and a net average rate per contract of $1.24 for February 2006. Direct transaction costs were $8.0 million for February 2007 versus $2.3 million for February 2006.
