Date 23/10/2003

PJM monthly electricity futures set a daily volume record on the New York Mercantile Exchange, Inc., yesterday and the PJM daily futures contract set a daily trading record today.

A combination of 2,603 contracts were cleared or traded and cleared in the monthly contract, surpassing the volume of 2,118 contracts on October 10. The volume includes a record 1,483 contracts traded through open outcry and 1,120 off-Exchange contracts submitted to the NYMEX ClearPortsm clearing website, the former breaking the previous trading record of 1,197 contracts, set on April 11, the day the contract was launched.

The daily electricity futures contract saw 500 contracts traded today on NYMEX ClearPortsm, exceeding the previous record of 391 contracts on September 8.

The PJM monthly electricity futures contract trades by open outcry from 7:30 AM to 2:30 PM and from 3:15 PM, Mondays through Thursdays, to 7 AM the next day on NYMEX ClearPortsm. On Sunday evenings, trading begins on NYMEX ClearPortsm at 7 PM. Electronic trading for the balance of the spot month, weekly, and daily PJM futures contracts, as well as clearing services for off-exchange trades, is available through NYMEX ClearPortsm during the same times.

Exchange President J. Robert Collins, Jr., said, "The continued growth in the PJM electricity futures complex, and the more than 13,000 contracts in open interest, is evidence that market participants place a high value on the market transparency and mitigation of counterparty credit risk provided by the Exchange."
