Sir Jeremy, a cabinet minister and chairman of the Conservative Party during John Major's administration has had a wide-ranging career in the commercial sector since retiring from politics in 1997. A chartered accountant, Sir Jeremy serves as a non–executive director of ITE Group plc, GTECH Holdings Corporation Inc., and the advisory board of Talal Abu—Ghazaleh International. Formerly he served as Deputy Chairman of The Financial Training Company where he was Senior Lecturer in Company Law, Chairman of the AdVal Group plc, and also as a member of the European Advisory Board of Credit Lyonnais. He has led numerous international trade missions to the Middle East and Asia and is a director of the Arab–British Chamber of Commerce and vice president of the British–Iranian Chamber of Commerce.
Sir Jeremy has been a Privy Counsellor since 1994 and a Knight Commander of the Order of St. Michael and St. George since 1997. He is a Freeman of the City of London and Master Elect and Senior Warden of the Worshipful Company of Chartered Accountants.
