Date 01/10/2003

The New York Mercantile Exchange, Inc., announced that the 5 millionth off-Exchange contract was posted for clearing this week through the NYMEX ClearPortsm clearing website.

Since the inception of clearing services for off-Exchange transactions on May 31, 2002, the equivalent of 73.6 million megawatt hours of electricity, 12.06 quadrillion British thermal units (Btus) of natural gas, 36.9 million barrels of crude oil and refined products, and 3.0 million tons of coal have been cleared through the Exchange clearinghouse, with a notional value of approximately $58.6 billion. Nearly 300 companies are registered to clear trades from a product slate of 66 energy contracts.

Open interest as of the close of business Friday was 8.7 million megawatt hours of electricity, 2.01 quadrillion Btus of natural gas, 4.3 million barrels of crude oil and refined products, and 1.0 million tons of coal.

Exchange President J. Robert Collins, Jr., said, "The continued robust growth in the NYMEX ClearPortsm platform since we passed the 4-million contract mark on July 28 is a strong indication that counterparty credit risk management remains a priority for market participants. Our energy customers have welcomed the opportunity to rely on the protection of the Exchange clearinghouse for off-exchange energy transactions."
