Nymex Clears 4 Millionth Contract Through NYMEX ClearPortsm

Date 29/07/2003

The New York Mercantile Exchange, Inc., announced that the 4 millionth off-Exchange contract was posted for clearing yesterday through the NYMEX ClearPortsm clearing website.

Since the inception of clearing services for off-Exchange transactions on May 31, 2002, the equivalent of 48.7 million megawatt hours of electricity, 9.74 quadrillion British thermal units (Btus) of natural gas, 9.7 million barrels of crude oil and refined products, and 2.5 million tons of coal have been cleared through the Exchange clearinghouse, with a notional value of approximately $46.3 billion. More than 260 companies are registered to clear trades from a product slate of 64 energy contracts.

Open interest as of the close of business Friday was 8.3 million megawatt hours of electricity, 2.12 quadrillion Btus of natural gas, 4.6 million barrels of crude oil and refined products, and 1.1 million tons of coal.

Exchange President J. Robert Collins, Jr., said, "Reaching this milestone so quickly after we passed the 3-million contract mark on June 4, is further evidence that the NYMEX ClearPortsm platform is meeting a critical need for market participants in mitigating counterparty credit exposure. The ability to clear off-exchange transactions and trade a wide range of non-traditional futures contracts virtually around the clock has resonated with our customers."
