NYBOT Trading Hits Historic Highs During March - Second Consecutive Monthly Volume Record; Sugar And FINEX Lead The Charge

Trading volumes soared in the month of March at the New York Board of Trade® (NYBOT®), where a grand total of 3,369,065 total futures and options contracts traded, making it the busiest month on record. The historic month eclipsed the February 2004 record volume of 2,677,489 futures and options contracts.

NYBOT's sugar market (symbols SB, SE, SO), one of the world's most heavily traded agricultural commodities, set a series of new records in nearly every category including daily futures and options volumes, and futures and options open interest. These new standards all added up to the best sugar trading month in the history of the exchange with 1,606,984 futures and options contracts changing hands during the month of March. World Sugar also had a daily volume record of 166,522 futures and options contracts set on March 26th.

NYBOT recently announced the launch of a World Ethanol contract (symbol XA) based on its popular World Sugar contract, with the futures contract starting May 7th and the options May 10th. The contract calls for the delivery of 7,750 U.S. gallons of biomass-derived, undenatured, anhydrous ethanol.

NYBOT's FINEX market also had a record month, with the US Dollar Index (symbol DX) setting a monthly volume record of 92,883 combined futures and options contracts. The currency markets showed considerable activity with a record 337,078 combined futures and options contracts being traded.

In the Equity Index markets, the Russell 1000® (symbol R) set a monthly volume record of 201,590 combined futures and options contracts, and the Equity Index markets also set a new monthly total volume record in March with 211,452 combined futures and options contracts being traded.
