Trading volume in the Coffee “C” futures contract (symbol KC) has increased 45% over the same period last year, with a total of 1,809,191 contracts YTD. Coffee options (symbol KO) are up 65% with 789,268 contracts traded YTD. The coffee options market rang up new records in May, with a new daily volume high of 24,388 contracts trading on May 28, surpassing the previous record of 22,177 contracts set on October 15, 2002.
The World Sugar No. 11 contract (symbol SB) recorded another big month with World Sugar futures now running 43% ahead of 2003 YTD at 4,324,417 contracts. A total of 1,154,723 Sugar No. 11 options contracts have traded through May 2004, a 79% rise over the previous year.
Additionally, FCOJ futures jumped 36% and options 64% (YTD); cotton futures rose 18% and options trading was up 46% (also YTD); cocoa futures posted gains and now show an 8% increase over 2003 (YTD).
In the financial markets, the US Dollar Index futures (symbol DX) trading shot up 54% and the options were up 167% (both YTD). Combined currency futures rose 47% (YTD) and combined options were up 152%.
The Equity Index markets at NYBOT also saw major increases, with the Russell 1000® futures (symbol R) up 11% (YTD) and the options up 245% (YTD). Russell options (symbol R) also established a new daily open interest record of 14,884 contracts on May 20, 2004. The previous record was 14,436 contracts set on May 19, 2004.
