NYBOT Remembers September 11th Terrorist Attacks

Date 09/09/2005

The New York Board of Trade (NYBOT) remembered the September 11th terrorists attacks today with several moments of silence during trading hours: two moments for when the Twin Towers were struck and two for when they fell, followed by 30 additional moments of silence, one for each of the members, staff and clerks affiliated with the NYBOT and the New York Mercantile Exchange (NYMEX) who died that day. In addition to the moments of silence, members of the NYPD opened the NYBOT markets for trading.

“September 11th, 2001, was a day that will always be remembered by everyone here at NYBOT,” said Frederick W. Schoenhut, NYBOT’s Chairman. “Today, we bow our heads in silence to honor all of our colleagues who perished during the attacks.”

The New York Board of Trade also unveiled a September 11th exhibit in its headquarters building in Lower Manhattan, the only exhibit in New York City with actual World Trade Center (WTC) artifacts. The artifacts are on loan to NYBOT from the New York State Museum, located in Albany, New York, and the Federal Bureau of Investigation (FBI), located in Washington, DC. The exhibit also contains numerous photos detailing NYBOT’s 9/11 story, as well as the Exchange’s 135-year history.

“It’s our privilege to share with NYBOT these important artifacts recovered from the World Trade Center,” said Mark Schaming, Director of Exhibitions and Programs at the New York State Museum. “Our goal is to educate the public as to what happened on September 11th, and since NYBOT was located in the World Trade Center, they are an ideal home for these very special items.”

Some of the objects in the NYBOT exhibit are: a large U.S. flag; a shear bolt; a glass fragment; building keys; a marble fragment, and WTC commemorative objects. All of the artifacts are non-personal and were preserved in 2001-2002 at the WTC Recovery operation at the Fresh Kills Landfill, in Staten Island, New York.

The NYBOT Futures and Options for Kids, the Exchange’s nonprofit group, also sold commemorative September 11th items.
