NYBOT 2002 Volumes Up Significantly For The Year - Numerous Trading Records Also Established

The New York Board of Trade (NYBOT®) announced today that its yearly exchange-wide volume was up 17% for the year (2002 vs. 2001), with the agricultural products volume up 16%, the currency products volume up 17%, and the index products up 52%.

In addition to increased volumes, the Exchange experienced numerous trading records throughout the year for such products as Cocoa Options, Coffee futures and the Russell 1000® Index futures contracts, among others.

Products showing the strongest growth in 2002 vs. 2001 include:

  • Cocoa options up 70% (743,237 in 2002 vs. 436,295 in 2001)
  • Coffee futures up 24% (2,718,508 in 2002 vs. 2,199,371 in 2001)
  • Euro/Yen futures up 15% (337,756 in 2002 vs. 294,733 in 2001)
  • Sugar No. 11 futures up 20% (6,173,756 in 2002 vs. 5,150,329 in 2001)
  • Cotton No. 2 options up 14% (1,171,843 in 2002 vs. 1,025,578 in 2001)
  • US Dollar Index futures up 20% (411,571 in 2002 vs. 342,948 in 2001)
  • Russell 1000® Index futures up 106% (646,455 in 2002 vs. 313,318 in 2001)

In addition to the above-referenced increases, NYBOT also experienced numerous volume records throughout 2002, some of which include:

  • Cocoa options annual record of 743,237 contracts, replacing the previous record of 495,221 contracts from 2000
  • Coffee futures annual record of 2,718,508, which replaces the previous record of 2,659,233 contracts from 1999
  • Russell 1000® Index futures record of 646,455, replacing 313,318 contracts set in 2001
  • Euro/Yen futures annual volume record of 337,756 contracts, replacing 294,733 contracts record from 2001
  • Combined Cocoa futures and options annual volume record of 2,823,217 contracts, replacing the previous record of 2,758,137 contracts set in 1994
  • Combined futures and options yearly volume record for the Euro/Pound of 124,499 contracts, replacing the previous record of 112,992 contracts set in 2001
  • US Dollar Index futures monthly volume record of 63,358 contracts set in December 2002, which replaces the previous record of 55,365 contracts set in March 1998

NYBOT is currently working out of its backup site in Long Island City, Queens, New York, where its products trade on an abbreviated schedule. The Exchange, which was located in 4 World Trade Center and was completely destroyed in the September 11th terrorist attacks, expects to return to Manhattan in the Third Quarter 2003.
