NZX announced today the acquisition of NewsRoom, a recognised innovator and pioneer of online news services in New Zealand.
Former Radio New Zealand journalist, Peter Fowler, founded NewsRoom in 1996. NewsRoom was the first New Zealand news agency to use the internet for a speed advantage, publishing press releases to the NewsRoom website while others were still relying on fax machines.
This development in technology completely changed the distribution of news as others got on board and online.
NewsRoom is an information tool that allows subscribers to follow daily and breaking news as it unfolds, pinpoint news topics specifically related to their areas of interest and search news archives.
NZX Head of Information Products and Fund Services, Columba Cryan said, “NewsRoom is a great fit for the NZX Group because its core processes are a ready match for our existing market information businesses. NewsRoom will add scale and depth of information for new and existing NZX information clients, both here and offshore.”
Peter Fowler will stay on with NewsRoom to ensure a smooth transition process and to guide further developments planned for the NewsRoom service.
“I am delighted that NewsRoom will continue to prosper and grow under NZX ownership, and I'm looking forward to helping the business deliver great things,” said Fowler.
With NewsRoom as the latest addition, the NZX Group now comprises the core NZX Markets Business and eight market-related “value-add” businesses that enable NZX to offer information and research services right across the market spectrum and now beyond.
