New York Stock Exchange Announces 2001 Financial Results

The New York Stock Exchange reported revenue of $884.0 million and net income of $31.8 million in 2001, compared with revenue of $815.3 million and net income of $72.9 million in 2000. Expenses included a $19.0 million charge related to the elimination of 150 floor-reporter positions in the third quarter of 2001 and $5.3 million in contributions to the NYSE Fallen Heroes Fund and Twin Towers Fund in relation to Sept. 11.

For fourth-quarter 2001, the Exchange reported revenues of $221.9 million and a net loss of $16.5 million. This compares with $208.7 million in revenue and a $291,000 net loss for the same period in 2000. In 2001, 144 companies joined the Exchange, compared with 122 in 2000. In fourth-quarter 2001, 42 companies joined the NYSE compared with 38 companies in the fourth quarter of 2000.

Average daily trading volume for 2001 was 1.24 billion shares worth $42.3 billion, compared with 1.04 billion shares worth $43.9 billion in 2000. For fourth-quarter 2001, average daily volume was 1.29 billion shares worth $39.0 billion, compared with 1.14 billion shares worth $44.5 billion in the same period last year.
