Overall Exchange volume of 901,646 futures and options contracts surpassed the previous record of 891,443 contracts set on March 7, 2002.
NYMEX Division futures volume was 646,927 contracts, exceeding the previous record of 631,276 contracts set on June 3.
Energy futures volume set a record of 642,796 contracts, compared with the previous record of 630,506 contracts, also on June 3.
A daily record was set on the electronically traded e–miNY energy futures(sm) contracts of 6,632 contracts, surpassing the previous record of 6,074 contracts set on September 15. e–miNY(sm) crude oil futures volume of 6,159 contracts exceeded the previous record of 5,510 contracts also set that day.
Exchange President James E. Newsome said, "Yesterday's trading records underscore the vital role the Exchange is playing in providing market participants with the opportunity to manage their price risk while mitigating counterparty credit risk in the current volatile market environment. The e–miNY energy futures(sm) contracts, which helped broaden participation in the markets, have set five volume records in the last six weeks, indicating that market participants are increasingly incorporating these products into their strategies."
