New York Mercantile Exchange: Gold Futures Sets Daily Volume Record; Comex Division Sets Monthly Volume Record

Gold futures contract set a daily volume record on the New York Mercantile Exchange, Inc., on Wednesday, November 24, as COMEX Division volume surpassed its previous monthly record.

Gold futures volume was 210,108 contracts during the session, surpassing the previous daily volume record of 187,427 contracts set on September 28, 1999. By the end of the day, 2,805,929 COMEX Division contracts had been traded during the month of November and, with two trading days remaining, had exceeded the previous record of 2,701,974 set in April 1987.

Exchange President James E. Newsome said, "The COMEX Division monthly and gold futures daily volume records are strong indicators of the confidence that today's market participants have in the liquidity and transparency of the COMEX Division metals contracts and our open outcry trading forum. Combined with after–hours electronic trading, these futures contracts are available 23 hours a day."
