New Weekly Volume Record Set At CBOE Futures Exchange - June Open Interest Reaches New High, Up 52% Over May

Date 21/06/2004

The CBOE Futures Exchange, LLC (CFE) announced today that volume during last week's five trading days set a record at the new exchange. For the week of June 14th to June 18th, volume at CFE totaled 4,129 contracts traded, surpassing the previous high of 3,809 during the week of April 26 to 30. Additionally, on June 16th, CFE open interest peaked to a new record of 7,906 contracts, which was a 52% increase over the May open interest peak of 5,196 contracts on May 10th. CFE, which launched on March 26, 2004, is a new all-electronic, futures exchange offering futures on the CBOE Volatility Index (VIX) and the CBOE S&P 500 Three-Month Variance Futures.

"We are very pleased by our steadily growing volume figures and sharp rise in open interest, both indicative of the growing customer base and expanding market participation we are experiencing at CFE," said Patrick Fay, Managing Director, CBOE Futures Exchange.

VIX futures (ticker symbol VX) are based on the CBOE Volatility Index, which was first introduced in 1993 and quickly became the benchmark index of market sentiment. Derived from real-time S&P 500 Index option prices, VIX is designed to reflect investors' consensus view of expected stock market volatility over the next 30 days. The CBOE S&P 500 Three-Month Variance Futures (ticker symbol VT) is an exchange-traded futures contract based on the realized variance of the Standard and Poor's 500 Stock Index over a three-month period.

The newly formed CFE is a wholly-owned subsidiary of Chicago Board Options Exchange, Incorporated, offering an all-electronic, open access market model, with traders providing liquidity and making markets. CFE trades are cleared by the triple-A rated Options Clearing Corporation (OCC). The newest futures exchange in the world, the CBOE Futures Exchange is regulated by the Commodity Futures Trading Commission (CFTC).
