New Scholarships And Content For NYSE Financial Education Program

Date 24/06/2011

  • Teachers Workshop Includes Sessions on Economic Crisis and Financial Literacy
  • Deserving Teachers from Under-Resourced Schools Get Support from NYSE Euronext

The annual NYSE Teachers Workshop gets underway on Monday, June 27, helping approximately 200 participants teach students about the financial marketplace and its role in the global economy.   This year for the first time, NYSE Euronext has provided scholarships to enable teachers from under-resourced schools to join the program.  In addition, new curriculum components will focus on the economic crisis and financial literacy.

“The economic crisis and the urgent need to broaden and deepen financial capability have combined to make our Teachers Workshop more vital and relevant than ever,” said Michelle Greene, NYSE Euronext’s Vice President and Head of Corporate Responsibility.   “Advancing financial capability is a key priority for NYSE Euronext, and we have worked to ensure that our teachers program is open, inclusive and updated with the latest information and insights for educators.”

Approximately 40 teachers are enrolled in each of five programs offered by NYSE Euronext and the U.S. Securities and Exchange Commission’s Office of Investor Education and Advocacy.   The first three – for first-time participants – will take place at the NYSE.  The other two are “graduate” programs for teachers returning for a second, more advanced session.  One of these will take place at the NYSE and one at the SEC in Washington, D.C.

The Teachers Workshop is designed to give educators a thorough understanding of the capital-raising process, market structure and technology, regulation, and financial products.   Lectures and discussions with speakers from NYSE Euronext, the SEC and other organizations enable teachers to translate the information to classroom curricula.

New components of this year’s program include:

  • For the first time, the Council for Economic Education will present a session on teaching about the economic crisis, and speakers from the Muriel Siebert Foundation will lead a session on financial literacy and capability.

  • NYSE Euronext has provided scholarships covering travel, lodging, food and registration to 45 teachers from under-served communities.  Educators receiving scholarships teach more than 6,500 students in 22 states; 89 percent are in Title I schools.

The enhanced Teachers Workshop is one of several initiatives announced by NYSE Euronext last April in connection with Financial Literacy Month, including the launch of a useful new tool to help companies improve the financial capabilities of their employees.
