Date 03/10/2022

FESE has just released its Listed Instruments Survey of 2021. A unique dataset, it offers a detailed breakdown of all the new listings, delistings and total listed equity instruments on Europe's exchanges.

2021 sees more new listings of both small and large caps

Headlines

New listings
  • There were three times as many new listings in 2021 as in 2020.
  • Most were IPOs - whose market cap on regulated markets (RMs) was roughly four times that of the previous year - followed by direct listings.
  • The number of newly listed companies increased in all selected industry sectors. The largest share of newly listed companies was in the industrials sector, followed closely by technology.
Delistings
  • The number of companies delisting increased on both RMs and multi-lateral trading facilities (MTFs).
  • Company wind-ups remained the most common delisting procedure on MTFs, while takeovers by non-listed companies was the most common precursor for delistings on RMs in 2021.
Total listed companies
  • In 2021, Spain was the country of incorporation for the largest number of listed companies, followed by Sweden, Poland, France and Germany.
  • The largest market cap of all listings at the end of 2021 was recorded by companies in the financial sector, followed by industrials.

IPO Database

The IPO Database, further enlarged this year, includes detailed information on individual IPOs on all FESE members since 2013. In addition, this year’s enlargement has brought good news:

  • The number of IPOs has seen a record increase in 2021, nearly tripling from 2020 and quintupling compared to 2019.
  • Average yearly turnover has also grown across the board with respect to the previous year, reaching record highs in many cases.
  • The same upward trend can be observed for average revenues and employees; after declining in 2020, both measures experienced a rebound in companies that are listed through an IPO.
  • For another year, the revenues of listed companies and their number of employees increased in their first year after listing.
