Today, Chainalysis, the blockchain data platform, has released the latest addition to its 2021 Geographies Report; the Eastern Europe Crypto Crime Report.
The report evaluates the region’s crime landscape in comparison to other regions including Western Europe, North America, Latin America and Africa. It measures eight global regions and reveals the share of illicit exposure by region; value of crypto sent to illicit addresses by region; and the top scam that victimised crypto users in Eastern Europe.
Highlights include:
- Eastern Europe sends more cryptocurrency to darknet markets than any other region - this is largely due to activity involving Hydra Market
- Between June 2020 and July 2021, Eastern Europe-based addresses sent $815 million to scams, second only to Western Europe
- Eastern Europe has sent the second most cryptocurrency of any region to illicit addresses, behind only Western Europe in terms of raw value
- More than half of the value sent to scam addresses from the region went to one scam: Finiko
