Worldwide, at the end of Q3 there were 669 ETFs with 926 listings managed by 68 managers trading on 37 exchanges with assets of $504.51 USD Bn. Year to date there have been 211 new ETFs launched globally, close to double the 119 launched in all of 2005. There are plans to launch a further 193 ETFs worldwide.
We have introduced a new section in the ETF Worldwide Guidebook which covers Exchange Traded Commodities (ETCs) (see pages 14 – 15). These are not “ETFs” as they are listed securities, not funds, which means the regulatory and tax treatment may be different than traditional ETFs. Similar to Exchange Traded Funds, ETCs are liquid, as they can be created and redeemed on a continuous basis by market makers, matching the liquidity of the underlying markets. ETCs are open-ended securities which can be bought and sold intraday by investors on an exchange in the same way as any equity.
