A total of 483,398 contracts were traded at the exchange during April, setting a new record for the calendar month. This exceeds the previous April record of 310,387 contracts set in 2005 by 55.7 percent.
A new record for the month of April was set in the hard red winter wheat futures contract, with 436,265 contracts trading, an increase of 51.0 percent over the previous record of 288,931 set last April.
Hard red winter wheat options volume also set a new volume record for the month of April, with 45,238 contracts traded. This exceeds the previous record of 34,308 contracts for the month of April set in 2002 by 31.9 percent.
Open interest continues to show increases compared to last year. Wheat futures open interest is up 115.8 percent and wheat options are up by 22.2 percent.
The Kansas City Board of Trade, founded in 1856, is the world's largest futures market for hard red winter wheat. This year, the exchange is celebrating its 150-year anniversary.
