New Australian Securities And Investments Commission Chief Accountant Appointed

Mr David Knott, Chairman of the Australian Securities and Investments Commission (ASIC), today announced that Mr Gregory Pound has been appointed as ASIC's Chief Accountant for a three-year term commencing 25 November 2002.

Mr Pound will join ASIC from his current role as Assistant Auditor-General, Accounting and Auditing Policy in the Victorian Auditor-General's office, which he has held since July 2000.

'Mr Pound is a senior and respected member of the accountancy profession who is well known both domestically and internationally. He will bring a wealth of relevant experience to ASIC', Mr Knott said.

'At a time when so much attention is directed to accounting and audit issues, his appointment will enhance ASIC's policy credentials and provide the leadership required across these critical areas of our work', he said.

Immediately before his appointment to the Victorian Auditor-General's office, Mr Pound was the Director, Auditing Standards at the Australian Accounting Research Foundation, a position he held for 10 years from 1990. In that capacity, Mr Pound gained extensive experience in a wide range of accounting and audit policy issues. In September 1999, he was appointed Acting Executive Director of the Australian Accounting Research Foundation.

In 1986 and from 1990-2000, Mr Pound was also Technical Advisor to the Australian representative to the International Auditing Practices Committee (now the International Auditing and Assurance Standards Board).

Mr Pound began his career in private practice as an auditor, before moving to academia. From 1987 to 1990, he was Associate Professor, Department of Accounting and Finance, and Director, Centre for Research in Accounting and Finance at Monash University.

  • Chairman, Australasian Council of Auditors-General (ACAG) Liaison Committee;
  • ACAG representative to the Australian Accounting Standards Board (AASB) Consultative Group;
  • Member, CPA Australia Financial Reporting Centre of Excellence;
  • Member CPA Australia Management Accounting Focus Group;
  • Chairman, Advisory Committee, Department of Accounting and Finance, Monash University (since 1994);
  • Member, Auditing Advisory Panel, CPA Programme of CPA Australia (since 1990);
  • Member, Editorial Board, Australian Accounting Review and ad hoc reviewer (since 1990); and
  • Member, Editorial Advisory Board, International Journal of Auditing (since 1997).
