National Commodity & Derivatives Exchange Planning To Launch Pioneer Contracts For Trading In Perishable Commodities Like Potatoes And Onions

Having successfully launched many liquid contracts in agriculture, energy and metal commodities which are relevant to the domestic markets, NCDEX is now taking up the challenge of launching futures contracts for perishable commodities beginning with potatoes and onions. The launch of futures contracts for trading in potatoes and onions will go a long way in making the supply chain efficient and by providing better prices to farmers even while the consumer pay a lower price; thus stabilizing production levels of potatoes and onions in the country.

Speaking on the topic, Ms. Sanvali Kaushik, Vice – President – Products said, “We have been researching on potatoes for the last three months and shall be launching the futures contract in potatoes very shortly after obtaining necessary approvals. Our innovative and relevant contracts have established benchmark quality and price reference for all commodities in the country. Our foray into perishables will be yet another pioneering step in an area which is of utmost domestic relevance.

We have also been asked by the authorities to explore offering trading in onions on our trading platform for better price discovery. We have begun researching the subject and in consultation with the concerned stakeholders, propose to come out with relevant solutions”.
