Nasdaq Set New Records In 1999 - Composite Index Shatters 4000, Share Volume Reaches All-Time Record - 484 Initial Public Offerings And 63 New Non-U.S. Listings

The Nasdaq Stock Market® ended 1999 in record territory, continuing its fifth consecutive year of record gains. The Nasdaq Composite Index® experienced the greatest point and percentage gain in its 28 year history, closing at 4069.31. The Index gained 1876.62 points and 85.59 percent for the year. The Nasdaq Composite Index also eclipsed the 3000 and 4000 point milestones during the last quarter of 1999.
Final figures demonstrate that share volume for the year reached 272.6 billion, up 35 percent from 202 billion in 1998. In 1999, Nasdaq® had 136 trading days with more than one-billion shares trading hands. The market value of the 4,829 companies listed on Nasdaq stood at $5.2 trillion, up over 100 percent from year-end 1998. This year also saw 484 initial public offerings.
The market's best index performers were the Computer, Telecommunications, and
Biotechnology up 105.03 percent, 102.71 percent, and 101.64 percent respectively. The Nasdaq-100 IndexÒ gained 101.95 percent over 1998.
The dollar value of trading on Nasdaq in 1999 was valued at $11.0 trillion, surpassing the previous record of $5.8 trillion in 1998 by 90 percent. Average daily share volume on Nasdaq reached over 1.08 billion shares in 1999, up from 802 million shares in 1998.
