Date 12/02/2001

Karnataka Chief Minister, Mr. S. M. Krishna, Minister for Information and Broadcasting and Nasdaq® Vice-Chairman, Alfred R. Berkeley, III, inaugurated the Nasdaq liaison office in Bangalore today by lighting the traditional lamp. Ghanshyam Dass, who has been appointed as Director, South Asia will be based in Bangalore to co-ordinate Nasdaq’s activities in the region.

"The decision to open an office in India was two-fold. First, to provide enhanced service to our existing companies, Infosys, Rediff and Satyam Infoway, and second, to assist other companies contemplating listing on Nasdaq," Berkeley said. "The intention is to open a door for Indian companies to access global funds and pools of liquidity. We hope many Indian companies will utilize this opportunity by accessing capital through Nasdaq", he added.

Dass joins Nasdaq following a career of over 24 years in domestic and international banking. Prior to joining The Nasdaq Stock Market®, Dass was the General Manager and Chief Executive of Majan International Bank in the Sultanate of Oman. He also worked with the British Bank of the Middle East for two years as the CEO for its India operations and with the Hong Kong and Shanghai Banking Corporation for over twelve years as Manager—South Asia & Middle East, Financial Institutions Group amongst other assignments.

"For Nasdaq’s representative in India, we wanted someone who not only had rich international experience but was also familiar with the Indian economy. Dass fits the requirement perfectly", said Patrick Sutch, Vice President, Asia-Pacific. "We are very happy to have him on board", he added.

The Nasdaq Stock Market lists nearly 5,000 companies, has a larger dollar volume, and trades more shares per day than any other market in the world.
